Good grief! Conspiracy theories! What next?????

Miss Muriel H. Wright was the long-time editor of "The Chronicles of Oklahoma" and when Dr. Angie Debo's book "The Rise and Fall of the Choctaw Republic" appeared with its suggestion that Chief Allen Wright (Muriel's grandfather) had his fingers in the till, Miss Wright gave it a 17 page review. This started a life-long private war between the two prominent Oklahoma historians. They were very cordial to one another in public but in private were scathing about each other.

When Dr. Berlin B. Chapman, long-time chair of history at A&M, (who was also, in Dr. LeRoy H. Fischer's words "a one-man Payne County Chamber of Commerce) sided with his friend Miss Debo on the location of Round MountainS, Miss Wright published a rejoinder to Miss Debo's rejoinder. It was a not so public argument for years.

The OHS Board of Directors, not wanting to make either side angry, simply refused to take sides, stating there was a conflict with evidence to support both but nothing conclusive to discredit one side or the other.

It was that simple folks. A SPAT between two old-maid historians who intensly disliked each other. (And may I add that in my experience there are old maids of both sexes!)

Ralph Jones, retired historic site superintendent (who also sides with his late friend Miss Wright)
