Re: Wm. Cloud, agent for the Choctaws?

Col. Wm F. Cloud, 2nd KS Cavalry, was born in Champaign County, Ohio on March 23, 1825. Died in Kansas City MO on March 4, 1905 and was buried in Carthage MO. He originally served in the 2nd KS Infantry as major for a 3 month enlistment before being promoted to colonel of the 2nd KS Cavalry. This Wm Cloud escorted Cherokee Principal Chief John Ross from his home in Park Hill, Cherokee Nation to Kansas in August 1862 when the 1st Indian Expedition (Weer/Salomon) returned north. He also participated in the Perryville Campaign and then pursued Cabell east, defeating him at Devil's Backbone, Sebastian County, AR. He would have been well known to the Confederates in the Trans-Mississippi.

There are two Clouds on the roster of the 1st Seminole Mtd Vols, Major George Cloud and Capt Thomas Cloud. As I recall, Phillips reported (in the ORs) that an officer by the name of Cloud was killed by his men during his Feb 1864 expedition into the Creek, Seminole, and Chickasaw Nations. I haven't been able to verify this.
