The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

Re: May 5,1861 Garvin County,Oklahoma

Hello Ken,

"William H Emory,Soldier -Scientist" by L.David Norris,James C Mulligan and Odie Faulk,University of Arizona.1988.204-205.

You will find much interesting info regarding the pre-war Indian Territory here.

"10 Years in the Saddle" by WW Averell.Presidio Press.1978.270-71.

Averell's account of the encounter on May 5,61 is much more accurate.

Will take me awhile to dig out Sturgis' book from whatever pile it may be hiding in...We are all familiar with Sam Sturgis and his unfortunate encounter with General Forrest a few years later in North Alabama.General Sturgis is buried at Crown Hill cemetery in Indianapolis and appears to have been quite a character. His wife said,"Finally, now I will always know where he is at."
