Re: Mission in Northeast Indian Territory?

For those of you dying of curiousity, the mission in question is the Osage Catholic Mission at what is now St Paul, KS. The mission was on Osage lands near the western boundary of the Cherokee Neutral Lands and on the road from Humboldt KS to Baxter Springs KS. The raids on Humboldt in 1861, reportedly by Watie, Livingston, and Matthews, passed by the mission on their way to and from Humboldt. Prior to the 1st Indian Expedition, Col. Doubleday assembled his forces at/near Humboldt and then marched via the mission to the vicinity of Baxter Springs. From there he scouted south and encountered some of Watie's men at Round Grove. Doubleday was recalled and replaced by Weer as commander of the expedition.
