This company was recruited and mustered as Co. "C" 5th Indian Home Guards and transferred to the 14th Regt Kansas Volunteer Cavalry as "M" Company per S.O. Approved by the Secretary of War at Washington D.C. August 22nd, 1864. The company left Fort Scott, Kansas with the 14th Fourteenth Regt of Kansas Vol Cavalry as escort to supply train on route to Fort Smith, Arkansas November 18th, 1863 and arrived at Fort Smith, Arkansas Dec. 6th, 1863. Done picket and scouting duty at the place up to Dec. 20th, 1863 when ordered to Fort Gibson C.N.. Arrived at Fort Gibson, C.N. Dec. 25th, 1863. Phillips, Commanding Indian Brigade at Fort Gibson, C.N.. Has done picket post and scouting duty together as escorting trains on the road to Fort Scott, Kansas up to present date, May 30th, 1865.

The commissioned officers in company, respectively Joseph G. Vann, Captain, Alexander A. Barnes, 1st Lieut. and Wm. S. Trott, 2nd Lieut. were commissioned by the Governor of Kansas and neither of them mustered as such up to the date of leaving the service as mentioned in the foregoing remarks opposite their respective names.

I certify that the above is a correct history of "M" Company as far as can be ascertained by all the records in my possession.

    Dudley Sawyer, 2nd Lt., Co."H", 14th K.V.C.
Comndg Co. "M", 14th Kan Vol Cav

2nd Lieut. Dudley Sawyer, Co. H, is buried in the Chandler-Wright Cemetery, Lincoln County, OK, b. Jan 1837, d. Jan 17, 1900, http://www.okcemeteries.net/lincoln/wrightc/wrightc.htm

Joseph G. Vann was a "conscripted recruit" as a private on Dec. 1st, 1862 in the 9th Kansas Cavalry and then "promoted to 1st Lieut in 5th Ind Reg".

Help me transcribe the remarks for Capt. Vann at http://www.kansasmemory.org/item/227703/page/97
"Dropped from the rolls Oct. 26th, 64 per instructions Hd Qrs Indian Brigade having been sentenced by General Court Marshal _______ month's pay as pvt, Co. "H", 9th Kans Cav and ________."

I know someone will correct me if I'm saying this wrong but the 4th and 5th IHG regiments were approved and officers appointed but did not recruit enough men to be accepted into the service and the officers were discharged.
