Re: 5th IHG, Co. C - 14th KS Cav, Co. M

Most interesting Ken. I hadn't realized that companies had actually been recruited for the 4th and 5th IHG, or at least the 5th. Wiley Brittain was present when officers showed up at Fort Blunt with the expectation of taking command of companies of the two mentioned regiments. As I recall Wiley wrote that there were no troops to command and Phillips ordered those men to return to Ft. Scott. This came at a time when W. A. Phillips made charges of fraud against men who were defrauding the IHG of their property. I haven't proved it yet but there are indications from vague correspondence that some of those officers selected for the remaining two regiments were Blunt nominees. I will wager this did not set well with Phillips.
