The 9th Ky Volunteer Inf. Regt recruited men from throughout Southern Ky. Their commander was Col. Ben Grider, a Bowling Green Attorney.

Early in 1861, they had a Training Camp (Camp Anderson)located on John Fraim's farm on Indian Creek between Fountain Run (then Jimtown) and Gamaliel, KY. Another camp was in southeastern Barren County at Nobob on a plateau overlooking Nobob Creek.

Both training camps were broken up in the fall of 1861. One, at Nobob, by the 24th Tennessee and Camp Anderson by the 25th Tennessee. Camp Anderson reorganized a month or so later but was broken up again by a force under Cleburne's comman. The camp's founder and the man who principally provided the funds to arm and equip the regitment, John Fraim, a wealthy farmer and owner of the largest number of slave in Monroe County, was arrested and taken to Nashville. He was later released but was captured again and shot by Confederates. He survived the wounds however.
