I am Devil john's gg grandson and a cousin as well. Their is an excellent site on webring on the wright geneology. Don't know about the union service though. He stated in an interview that he escaped from the union twice. There is a lot of weird tales about john, one of which is that he rode with quantrill. He did however have at least 31 kids.
