If you'll forgive the interjection, Greg is absolutely correct about this regiment being an infantry command. From time to time some infantry units like this one were temporarily given mounts during an emergency. However, Buford's Kentucky Brigade didn't leave infantry service until mounted and assigned to Forrest's Cavalry in March 1864.
