Kentucky Soldiers and Their Regiments in the Civil War is a compilation of newspaper articles appearing in contemporary newspapers, concerning,as the name suggests, Kentucky soldiers. These include all those Kentuckians who served in the Union or Confederate service, Kentucky State Guard, militia and Home Guard. It also includes Kentuckians who were guerrillas, provided they are identified. It does not contain "official reports," which are better accessed from the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion; nor does it include lists of soldiers in, or who have died, in hospitals. The researcher is better served using the Compiled Service Records, or at least the four volumes of Adjutant General's Reports.

There will be one volume for each year of the Civil War. The Louisville Daily Journal, being the most prolific and most popular paper out of Kentucky during the war is used as a base. Depending upon the year there are Louisville, Frankfort, Maysville, and Paris, Ky. newspapers, as well as those from Nashville, and elsewhere in Tennessee; and there are a few issues of the Atlanta Southern Confederacy utilized. Within these papers, there are many other newspapers referenced, including the Evansville Journal, New Albany Ledger, several Cincinnati and Richmond [Va.] papers, and many more from both north and south. There is an every name index which also includes an index of Kentucky regiments, both Union and Confederate.

Keep in mind that these are abstracts and are generally paraphrased. Full names and regimental designations are added wherever possible for the sake of clarity.
