Thanks for your help with this. The most confusing element involves Desha's two companies, which evidently served with both regiments. When the twelve month enlistments for his regiment expired, Col. Hawkins reassembled as many companies as possible from those who could be pursuaded to reenlist as well as new recruits. This amounted to eight full companies. The two companies under Capt. Desha transferred from the 9th Kentucky eventually completed the new 5th Kentucky Regiment.
