Re: Hugh Wilkins - Louisville flag maker

Hello,
my ancestor's unit, the 104th Illinois, carried 2 flags (Nat'l. and Regt'l.) from Sept-Dec 1862 (both captured at Hartsville, Dec. 7, 1862). One was preserted to them before they left Ottawa, Illinois, bound for Louisville.

Of the Illinois regiments raised in July/August 1862, seven (the 73rd, 79th, 84th, 102nd, 104th, 105th, and 129th) went to Louisville, first, and all 7 carried flags made by Wilkins! How did this marketing feat come about? Did the Illinois Adjutant General or the Governor have anything to do with this?

Sincerely,

Steve Adolphson

P.S. You might be pleased to know that wonderfully replicated Hugh Wilson flags fly at the head of "Company H, 104th Illinois" reactivated today, just go to thier website, and see for yourself.

p.p.s.s.-my email is down, so if you try to reach me that way, I might be slow in answering.
