Union Soldier: William T. Hoblitzell

I have run up on some interesting information relating to Lieutenant William T. Hoblitzell, a somewhat obscure character in Ky's Civil War History. Lt.Hoblitzell in the summer of 1861 was a recruiter for Col.Rousseau forming regiments at Camp Holt a fact that brought him some southern scrutiny... It seems that Hoblitzell was known to have been actively pursuing recruits in Butler County and his actions brought the attention of the KY boys down at Camp Boone in late August of 1861. An officer at Boone, reportedly Robert Ford ????, apparently dispatched a patrol to capture Lt. Hoblitzell and bring him to justice at Boone. On Thursday, August 30th, the patrol found the Lieutenant first at the train station in Hart County whereupon he was put under arrest, tied and loaded onto the cars headed south. At some point along the way, Hoblitzell jumped from the car and at least one round was fired at him as he exited. By Saturday evening Hoblitzell was known to have made his way to freedom and had arrived in Louisville.

This is one version of the story, I would love further information on this incident and a little more history on Hoblitzell.

I do know that he was and Aide to General Ales McD. MccCook and that he was later promoted to Lt.Colonel honorably commanding the 5th Ky Cavalry at Chicamaugua. In later life, Lt.Col. Hoblitzell and his wife, Loretta, located in Cumberland City, Allegany County, Maryland.
