Re: Union Soldier: William T. Hoblitzell

Thank you sir for your info.

Your information is very similar to the reports that appeared in the "Louisville Daily Journal" at the end of August 31st and September 2nd.,1861. The paper states his capture took place at Elizabethtown on Thursday, Aug. 30th. at Elizabethtown and that his captors were "a posse from Camp Boone". Hoblitzell escaped his captors and jumped from the train. He was reported as being in Louisville on Saturday evening of that same week.

It is very unlikely, in my opinion, that his jump from the train (or escape) took place at Muldraugh's Hill. Muldraugh's Hill is north of Elizabethtown and his captors were to have been transporting him to Camp Boone. The train would have been traveling south toward Bowling Green and Camp Boone and not northerly from Elizabethtown toward Muldraugh's Hill and Louisville.

I must admit that I have not yet read the "Louisville Courier" rendition of this incident. As you know, reports of the "Journal" and the "Courier" vary so much that one can't be sure that an event even happened.
