Re: Confederate soldiers of Kentucky

Owen S.Carpenter was my 2nd great grandfather who donated land for the first school in Troy, Texas on October 4, 1879. After the American Revolution, parcels of land were bestowed to Owen's grandfather (Jacob)for his support during the war. Jacob was one of the original settlers who left Virginia and settled in Kentucky. This is where Owen S. Carpenter was born. Jacob and Owen's German/Swiss ancestors left Switzerland arriving in Philedelphia where they were farmers and surveyors. Owen S Carpenter married a well educated young woman from Kentucky they lived in Kentucky until after the Civil War when they fled with several of their freed slaves to Troy Texas. My mother and her mother, Mary Jane lived in the house with Owen S Carpenter & "Mimmi" as she was known by her grandchildren. One of the former slaves, "Big Red", often looked after my mother.
