Sadly there is alot of confusion centered around the 5th Kentucky.Most people dont understand the regiment or thier records.Geoff is correct that the above post is full of incorrect information.The 5th was formed as a one year regiment.Records were poorly kept so the service records are no where near complete for those who served the first year.The regiment as a whole,when thier service was up requested permission to reenlist for the duration of the war as a Cavalry regiment.They were denied permission so many stacked thier arms and went home to join the Cav.Those that remained in camp reenlisted for the duration of the war and reorganized.These men were moved into Tennessee and would operate with the Orphan Brigade.The 5th had many men from Pike,Floyd,Letcher and Perry Counties also.They were not at Shiloh and were not the Louisville Legion.The regiment had slightly over 3000 men that served under its banner.If you are a descendant of one of the original soldiers that enlisted for one year,dont rely on just the official records.You will have to do some research to get a true picture of thier service.
