It just so happens that I had been working on this regiment when I lost all my data files last month. If I recall, there were as many as thirty different company organizations associated under command of Col. Hawkins during 1861-62. Two companies actually did transfer to the other 5th Kentucky, also known as the 9th Kentucky. I was impressed by the large number of officers and men from Morgan County KY, as well as adjoining counties. Descriptions always led me to believe a majority came from counties along the border of Virginia. Obviously quite a number were residents of those counties, but far more came from the interior of Kentucky.
