What happened to the bodies?

I don't think I have ever seen a discussion on this subject, but I am curious as to what happened to the bodies of the fallen Union/Confederate Civil War soldiers. Was the body returned to his family/home for proper burial?

I recently visited the Civil War battleground in Murfreesboro., TN only to learn that all the graves there were of Union soldiers and the bodies of Confederates were buried in a mass grave elsewhere. I was searching for my Confederate soldier.

Another ancestor Jonathan RF Poston served in the KY 23rd, Company B for the Union. He died at Stones River battle in TN. I am curious as to whether his body was buried there in TN or returned to his family in Newport, KY? It is my understanding he fought, was wounded and later died of his injuries. His record states he did not survive the War and Mustered out on 27 Jan 1863 at Hospital, Stone River, TN.

Does this mean he went home? How would I find out?

Thank you,
Carole Lannom
