According to his service record, he died Jan 27, 1863 in hospital near Stones River after that battle. It was usual to bury the dead nearby unless they were killed near where they lived or they had a family member in their unit who could see to getting the body back home. Neither army really had the resources to preserve bodies until someone could come hundreds of miles to get them.
I checked the Stones River National Cemetary and he has a listing there.
