Technically, the Louisiana Native Guards were enrolled in Louisiana State Militia service, but never transferred into Confederate service. The Louisiana State Militia wore blue uniforms (those that had uniforms), so one can only say that the Louisiana Native Guards were in "gray" metaphorically speaking. They formed their unit(s) to protect their property rights and personal status within the New Orleans community during a time of intense political crisis and were not formed for service outside the region. When the government of New Orleans and the surrounding region shifted to the Federals, it was only natural to offer their services to the new management team in town.
