In Response To: Wounded 8th LA Inf ancestor ()

Good day, I got the following from Wayne Cosby (don't mean to step on his feet):

Carroll, James M., Private
James Carroll was 31 years old and a native of Louisiana when he enlisted in New Orleans on June 19th, 1861. He had married Jane Elvira Allen on Feb. 15th, 1849 in Franklin parish. He was a farmer in Winnsboro at the time. James was wounded at Gaines Mill, VA on June 27th, 1862. He was listed as absent, sick until May 1863 and then was generally present until he surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th, 1865. His name is also listed as James A. Carroll.

I found the following from the 1860 US Census:
James M Carroll -
Age: 30
Was a Day Laborer
Born in Louisiana
Did not own property or real estate (at least the Census did not show ownership)
Wife - Jane Elvira Allen, married 2/15/49

Booth's Records shows the following:
Carroll, James A. (also Cerrol, James [No other reference to this name in Booth's other that here]), Pvt. Co. E. 8th La. Infty. En. June 19th, 1861, New Orleans, La. Present on Rolls to April, 1862. Roll for Feb. 28th to June 30th, 1862, Absent. Wounded, Rolls from July, 1862, to May 14th, 1863, Absent. Sick. Present on Rolls, May, 1863, to Oct., 1864. Paroled at Appomattox Court House, Va., April 10th, 1865. Eyes black, hair gray, complexion dark, height 5 ft. 6 in., Res. Franklin Par., La., born Louisiana, occupation farmer, age when enlisted 31, married.

Please note there was also a Alexander Carroll in Company E, but he died in July of 1862. Wayne believes Alexander and James to be brothers. During my search of the Census records I could not make any linkage between the two.

Hope this helps
JIM T
