Libby Custer (George's wife) said that her husband told her that the one of the forts at Alexandria was named for a man that he (George Armstrong Custer) went to school with at West Point. Now, just because Libby Custer says something does not necessarily make it so. Does anyone out there know if either of the namesakes of those two forts, Randolph or Buhlow, ever attented the Military Academy at West Point? Or was Libby possibly confused by the fact that Fort DeRussy, a little way down the river, was named for a West Pointer (although not a classmate of Custer's.)
