It would be difficuly to say as to why he would of come.I don't think anyone in the ranks reliezed the hardships they were about to endure.Daniel was a devote catholic my mother insists that is the only reason he survived.By the grace of God.It is speculation but, Joseph Husselbee would of been in New Orleans prior for some time.I would assume he recieved the fifty dollar bounty for enlisting.A sizable sum over seven months pay. Conscription started in Apr.Recruiting for the 6th was going on in earnest Feb. and March of 62.Daniel Riordan mustered in Feb.Original regiment was formed in the 61,I believe July?.There is another man named Daniel Reardon same Co.F.who enlisted in 61.The two men surprisingly have much the same record except my Daniel was literate the other wasn't.His muster slips are signed with an "X" my Daniel signed his name. He was a clerk in New Orleans prior to the war coming in 1854 aboard the "Onward" a cotton ship out of Liverpool. He became County Clerk for Dubuque Iowa till retiring upon his release from Elmira Prison. He became a U.S.citizen in 1868.His listing in the roster is wrong as he was captured at Mine Run and held the duration.#1 captured at Wilderness and released and was one of those with Lee at surrender.I know this from a pension filed from Daniel #1.New Orleans fell into federal hands in Apr.of 62 and remained for the duration. You might check ship manifests to see when Joshep arrived.I have heard of going to Galviston ,Tx. and going overland to New Orleans as the blockades were not as strong there.Feel free to write me directly if you should desire these men were truely a band of brothers...
