I found something in a report written May 20,1863 concerning Dec.26-Jan.5,1863 while at Stone River by J.M.Withers,Maj.Gen.of Polks Corp,Army of Tennesee, while at Shelbyville,TN.,......"Maj.B.M.Thomas,adjutant and inspector gen.,reported to the field from sick leave on the morning of the 2nd,and immediately entered on the discharge of his duties with intelligence and efficiency.Lieut.R.W.Withers,aide de camp,Asst.Surg.J.Paul Jones, and Lieut.Charles L. Huger,First Louisiana(Regulars),were, throught the entire engagement, actively, zealously, and most creditably engaged in the discharge of various duties assigned to them.Maj.W.H.ross,commissary of substance, and Maj.R.Q. Pinckly, quartermaster, did good service in their respective departments.Capt.[T.M.] Lenior and Leiut.Gordon, commanding escort, gave valuable assistance in collecting and sending off captured property....."My answer might be found in the officers listed Capt.[T.M.]Lenior and Leiut.Gordon.What Companies were they attached to?Would collecting and sending off captured property apply to prisoners? The reason I have interest is my GGGrandfather took on the name J.Clark 1st.LA.(1st.Lt.John F.Elliott 36IL.Inf.)(Clark his wife's maiden name)after donning a butternut suit, from a fellow prisoner, and escaped from train bound for Libby Prison, long story as to why,at Conyers, Georgia Feb.26,1863.Re-entering Federal lines at Corinth,MS. in late March, via Dalton,Pigeon Mt.,McLemores Cove following the North Chickamaunga river south around Lookout Mt.,Moulton,Russelville ending three miles south of Rienzi,Ms.Recognizing it,having been there in May -July 1862.He then reported to Gen.Grenville Dodge,Commander of Corinth,Who among many other things was an intelligence officer. The only way an Illinois Yankee would know anything about the 1st.La. is if he had some form of contact with them.If he was captured the Dec.31,would they start to load prisoners south Jan.2?I thought you might find it interesting that the 1st.LA.Inf.Regulars helped a Yankee get home.....By the way I'm a Texan so don't go to hard on me....Mike
