According to Hewett's "Texas Confederate Soldiers" Flynt served in Colonel George T. Madison's 3rd Texas Cavalry (Arizona Brigade), Company B. The regiment served in New Mexico in 1861 and in numerous engagements in Louisiana in 1863 and 1864. The two key battles of the Red River Campaign were at Mansfield and Pleasant Hill, Louisiana on April 8 and 9, 1864. According to eyewitness accounts, the fallen soldiers were buried in mass graves (trenches) which remained unmarked.
