The reference to is occupation as a printer, could be recognizing his occupation prior to joining up to fight the war. I have looked at a lot of occupations of soldiers from Louisiana and their military record shows, in general, their pre-war occupation, not there war years occupation (teamster, courier, etc).

I am not sure if that there were military printing offices (I strongly feel there was no 'Stars And Bars' newspaper (like the WWI and WWII "Stars and Stripes" newspaper), but if there were he might have been assigned to one. His military record should identify where his assignments were.
