St. Mary Cannoneers

In doing research on these soldiers, I found that just before the war ended they were encamped at Shreveport, LA and marched from there to Navarro County, Texas, on their way to Mexico...so it was said.... This was after Lee and Johnston had surrendered. Then "seeing how foolish it was" they were disbanded.

If this story is true, I have a few questions:

1. Where were they disbanded. Could they have been somewhere in Arkansas...on their way to Mexico? I ask this about Arkansas because I've been told some of the St Mary Cannoneers walked back to Louisiana fron Arkansas and this information came from family members....in direct conflict with the Navarro County march.

2. Were they paid any money when they were released to go home?

3. Did they strike out for their homes in Louisiana alone...or did they walk over 350 miles alone?

4. How did any of their sick soldiers get home?

Any other info would be appreciated.
