I have spent years researching the material culture of Confederate uniforms with emphasis in the past few years on Louisiana in particular. I can tell cotton jean from wool jean, from satinette to broadcloth, etc. I have also been able to pick up on possible colors in photos, which is something different than trying to figure out colors from modern day black and white photography.
