Dont know if this answers your question but my great grandfather was in Grays 28th Infantry and on his application for confederate pension one of the questions was--where were you at the surrender, his answer was Mansfield La. Another question was---did you take the oath of allegiance to the United States Government at any time during the war and his answer was No Applicants had to affirm that they remained true to the confederate cause until the surrender. Some men may have taken the oath but I suspect that many did not, they just left their units and went home.
