I believe he was elected as 2nd Lt in 1861. This from rolls found at Tulane, and composed by Wayne Cosby.
From my readings he was only a Company Staff Officer while with the 8th when in Virginia.
'Sometimes' when soldiers were filling out pensions, they tended to be a bit liberal with their military record.
