Re: Violet Guards' uniform
In Response To: Violet Guards' uniform ()

Jim,

I knew I had seen the reference to the Violet Guards' uniforms somewhere and found it today. 1st reference - New Orleans Daily Crescent, May 3, 1861 ..."This new company, named after our esteemed townsman, W. A. Violett--a compliment to Mr. V. and his family have well earned--made their first appearance on the streets last night. They numbered well, and their drill was excellant."
2nd reference - N. O. Daily Crescent, May 6, 1861..."Patron: W. A. Violett...The company is very large and manly looking one, composed almost entirely of firemen belonging to Irad Ferry Fire Company No. 12. Their uniform is of a light violet color, in significance of their name." Due to the unusual name, I looked and found that Irad Ferry was a leading businessman and popular fireman in killed in a fire in 1837.
