Re: 16th Louisiana Mounted Infantry

Jim, my first guess is that the author assumed that since it was Colonel Gober (formally of the 16th Louisiana) that the mounted infantry unit he was given permission to raise was probably his 16th. Gober spent February-April of 1864 pushing for a transfer to Louisiana - to collect all the Louisiana soldier's in Polk's department, have himself promoted to a brigadier general and command that Louisiana brigade. Instead, he was transferred to east Louisiana to collect absentees, etc. for Gibson's Brigade. While doing so, Polk agreed to have Gober transferred to his department with orders to raise a regiment of mounted infantry which became known as Gober's. Wasnt this unit merged into a bigger unit later on in the war?
