Louis Lay applied for a presidential pardon on 7-18-1865 and the images of his application are available at Ancestry.com. Do you have a copy?

1. Resigned his commission from the 6th Regiment on 2-10-1862 and left for Europe on 6-5-1862 via New York and resided in France until the end of October of 1862.
2. At the end of October 1862 left Europe and went to Havana, Cuba and "became interested in several blockade running schooners from time to time". Abandoned that business in the middle of 1863.
3. Became a broker for the sale of cotton in 1863 and continued in that business until the date of his application.
