Searching for Ancestor

I am trying to discover if there are any service records for my great-great grandfather, James Anderson. As the name is so common, and I have no records of a middle name or initial this has been difficult. James Anderson was born in 1813, making him 48 years of age in 1861. As conscription in La was expanded to those 50 years of age he may have served. Family legend is that he did. James Anderson lived in or near Cameron LA in Calcasieu Parish at the time of the war. His wife's name was Sarah.
That is all the relevant information I can find on him. His son, Issac who was a young boy at the time, told my father that while standing in the front yard he and his sisters could hear the cannon firing during the Battle of Calcasieu Pass. I would appreciate even a good guess as to James Anderson's military service.
