Re: J.R. Cavanaugh, Ninth Louisiana

Terry,

Major Kavanaugh(1st Captain of Co K.9th La Inf.)and Captain McCranie returned to Jackson Parish after exchange and continued to recruit and gathered up all the exchanged men of Co K.at Jackson,Mississippi. They were then transfered to the 2nd.Co.M of the 12th La. then at Holly Springs right after the second Battle of Corinth. Men serving in Virginia who wanted to continue to serve with the Jackson Greys were sent back to Mississippi and the 12th La.

I do not know specifically why these exchanged prisoners were not returned to the 9th La. Perhaps a local manpower shortage in Mississippi.

I have often thought perhaps how personaly fortunate for myself that my ancestor Wilson was captured that day in Alabama. He survived the war. Is probable he may have not in Virginia with that famous Tiger Brigade.
