Another USCT recruiting depot was Milliken's Bend, Louisiana. Roughly 1,000 contraband were organized there in the late spring of 1863 into the "African Brigade." Walker's Texas Division attacked them in early June, just a day or so after they received their rifles but before they were trained in how to use them.
