Two other division commanders with Louisiana connections were Martin L. Smith and William E. Starke. Smith was at Vicksburg and Starke assumed command of one of Jackson's divisions at Second Manassas when its commander was wounded, and briefly led the same division at Sharpsburg until he was KIA.
