Spencer was killed on August 28,1862 during the portion of the battle of Second Manassas know as the Fight at Brawner Farm or the Battle of Groveton. The 15th regiment was in Starke's Brigade,which was in support of the Confederate Artillery during the battle. The current issue of Blue&Gray magazine features the first two days of the Battle of Second Manassas, which includes the Fight at Brawner Farm.
