Jamie, you are correct. Fortunately for the World War II war effort and unfortunately for modern Civil War cannon fanatics, large numbers of cannons were melted down or otherwise turned into scrap. For example, at one time West Point had a half dozen or so cannons captured from the Confederates at Port Hudson, including the damaged 12-pounder howitzer shown in the photograph of Fort Desperate, that were scrapped for the war.
