Actual sentiments among social groups often runs counter to what you might expect. For instance, many of the largest planters were antebellum Whigs, believing that the best defense of slavery could be made within the Union. As often as not, they resisted secession and hoped that armed conflict would end quickly so the antebellum status quo could be reestablished.

Secessionists were often men who had little to loose in a social revolution.
