The William H. McCown who was captain MSG was the son of Col. James McCown of the 5th MO, a Warrensburg resident. He has a bio article in the 1878 U.S. Biographical and Portrait Dictionary (Missouri Volume) p. 723. This William was, I believe, the colonel.
