"On New Year's morning, in 1862, a party from Kansas under the leadership of Colonel Anthony, visited the Grosshart home and took the father, Samuel Grosshart, prisoner. He was placed in a wagon belonging to the Staley boys, and behind a negro driver taken forcibly to Dayton. He was kept over night in Dayton and the next morning about nine o'clock, he, with two others, Harry Fulerson and an aged man by the name of Simpson, was taken to a hollow, west of George McCullough's present residence and brutally shot. The three are buried in Dayton Cemetery. . . ";
