henry sladek was my great great grandfather,born mirowicz bohemia, escaped 1848 from revolution. thru port bremen.
i have been unsure date of arrival to america or port of arrival. he was editor of czech newspaper in st louis mo. in 1850s he was with alfred sydney johnson utah expedition (called old army in some archives ).joined war in 1861 freemont body guards, was in several different sections, shot in april 1863 stony battery near patterson, mo. he was in group defebding a retreat, surrounded, "cut his way out" , shot in upper thigh but escaped. he used
his saber to do the cutting. he was in cavalry and was in the well known cavalry group that charged confederates
in springfield, mo. i am forgetting name of the group but they used saber well. he was angry that he lost his hat. he went on asasst provost marshall and some of his letters in mnissouri archives. he died 1902 and large monument in paris mo cemetery describes his life. cool guy. had three sons. dolores sailor
