Message 12278-Alford at Vandalia

There was a Dr. Alford at Vandalia, MO, who owned Slaves, from which African Americans still there were descended. (Bryants) If one wished to contact a GG grandson (foster, his grandmother raised in the doctor's home and inherited their property), who now lives in the doctor's old house, I could give the name to anyone who wished to write me, he has moved back to area.

I was interested in the Madisonville, MO, post also, but that correspondent could get to Madisonville much more easily than his discription. Madisonville is directly S. of Center, MO, (which is on Hwy. 19), then S. on lettered blacktop, then to the east a couple of miles, also on blacktop.

One of my grt. grandfathers (John Henry Butler) served in the CSA, was captured in ARK, took the oath, came back and later served in the "corn stalk" militia for local protection. He is buried basically S. of Madisonville in the Dudley Butler family cemetery on the Evans farm.

The other grt. grandfather from the same area, served in the Union Army. (Willoughby Scott Gatson-buried at the Vandalia Cemetery.)

Thanks, Anita L. Gatson Allee
