Commanded by Col. Colton Greene; Lt. Col. L. A. Campbell; Lt. Col. D. Todd Samuel; Maj. Thomas J. McQuidy; and Maj. James Surridge. It was formed from the 3rd Missouri Battalion in 1862. It began its service in the engagements at Vicksburg and fought its final major engagement at the Battle of Ft. Blakely, Alabama on 1-9 April 1865

3rd Regiment, Missouri Cavalry
3rd Cavalry Regiment was organized during the summer of 1862 with men from Springfield and Newtonia, and Polk County. Many of its members had seen prior service in the Missouri State Guard. It served in Shelby's, C. Green's, and J.B. Clark's Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department. The unit fought in Marmaduke's Expedition into Missouri, participated in numerous conflicts in Arkansas, and with Marmaduke, 9 at Helena, and 4 at Bayou Fourche. The regiment lost 2 killed and 5 wounded at Poison Spring, 6 killed and 31 wounded at Jenkin Ferry, and 19 killed and 110 wounded during Price's Expedition. In the spring of 1865 it disbanded. The field officers were Colonel Colton Green, Lieutenant Colonels L.A. Campbell and L.C. Campbell, and Major James Surridge.

3rd Battalion, Missouri Cavalry
3rd Cavalry Battalion was formed early in 1862 with about 400 officers and men. Ordered east of the Mississippi River, the unit was dismounted. It took an active part in the conflicts at Iuka and Corinth, then was assigned to General Buford's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. The battalion was involved in the Vicksburg operations and in November, 1863 consolidated with the 1st Missouri Cavalry Regiment. Assigned to General Cockrell's Brigade, it fought in the Atlanta Campaign and in Tennessee with Hood. Later it shared in the defense of Mobile. The unit lost more than twenty-five percent of the 388 engaged at Iuka and sustained 100 casualties at Corinth. During the Atlanta Campaign, May 18 to September 5, the 1st/3rd Battalion reported 25 killed, 80 wounded, and 3 missing, and there were 56 disabled at Allatoona. Few surrendered in May, 1865. Its commanders were Lieutenant Colonels L.C. Campbell and D.Todd Samuel, and Major Thomas J. McQuiddy.
