Re: 3rd. missouri calvary CSA
I am the gg grandson of Rice Hugh Holtzclaw. Rice and two of his younger brothers joined the confederacy on January,25 1862, Greene county Missouri ( Springfield ). Mo. 3rd battalion volunteer cavalry( dismounted ) company D under capt. furnish. All three of these Holtzclaws among others were captured on May 17, 1863, outside of vicksburg mississippi, at the Big Black bridge, on the Big Black River.This was part of Gen. Sterling Prices Guard. Battles include Lexington,Sugar creek,Elkhorn,Farmington,Iuka,Corinth,Hatchie Bridge,Bakers Creek,and Big Black Bridge from what i understand. This family was from Clay County Missouri, and released after signing oath of allegence to the United States, on march 24, 1864,Lookout Point M.D.
