Coleman, age 32, enlisted as a Private in Company D, 1st Battalion Tennessee Infantry December 9, 1861 at Sparta, Tennessee, appointed 4th Sergeant September 20, 1862, captured at Abbeville/Fort Donelson February 16, 1862, sent to Camp Morton Prison Camp, Indiana, exchanged at Vicksburg arriving at Jackson, Mississippi September 12, 1862, the December 10, 1863 muster roll notes "Captured at Abbeville but exchanged, yet at home, n.d., the last card in his file records him in the 50th Tennessee Infantry on a list of prisoners of war forwarded by Provost Marshall at Holly Springs, Mississippi to Cairo, Illinois, n.d.
About November 1, 1862 the regiment was temporarily consolidated with the 50th Tennessee Infantry, permanently in February 1864.

1st Battalion, Tennessee Infantry (Colms')
1st (Colms') Infantry Battalion [also called 20th Battalion] was organized at Camp Weakley, Tennessee, in January, 1862, with five companies. The men were from DeKalb and White counties. It moved to Fort Donelson and in February was captured. After being exchanged, the battalion was assigned to J. Gregg's and Bate's Brigade and participated in the conflicts at Chickasaw Bayou, Port Hudson, Raymond, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge. It had 43 men disabled at Raymond and of the 82 engaged at Chickamauga, fifty-four percent were disabled. In December, 1863, the unit totalled 60 men and 24 arms, and during February, 1864, it was consolidated with the 50th (Old) Tennessee Regiment to form the 50th (New) Tennessee Regiment. Major Stephen H. Colms was in command.
