[In reference to James A. Vaughn, per Rulen's and Pennington's Roster]:
One of Quantrill's first recruits, 12/25/1861. Formed with nine
other men at the farm of Mrs. Samual Crump between Independence
and Blue Springs. Said to have been the beginning of Quantrill's
band as an entity with a separate and distinct leader.

As I understand it, the original men to follow Quantrill in 1861 were William Haller, James & John Little, Edward Coger (Koger), Andrew Walker (son of Morgan Walker), John Hampton, James Kelly and Solomon Basham. John Newman Edwards lists them on page 52...
