I don't know of this man or his units, but if you're close to Kansas City you should check out the NARA branch next to Union Station for Record Group 110, dealing with the Provost Marshal General's Bureau - Missouri. This was a branch of the U.S. Government created about 1863 to handle recruitment, and there are many records showing "Col'd" recruits and substitutes for drafted men. Here's one example: On November 4th, 1864, William Adams (Col'd), age 22, 1st Mil. Dist. (North St. Louis), was mustered in as a substitute for Joseph Eller of Washington Co., IL (12th Dist.). Here's another of a different type: On March 23rd, 1865, Frank Reed (Col'd) was rejected in his medical exam as "physically incompetent." He was age 18; single; good physique; 5'3"; eyes, hair & complexion all black; chest measurements 33" (inhale) by 31" (exhale); scar on back left thigh. His residence was Somersett Twp., Mercer County, Missouri, where he was a farmer, but he was born in Garrett Co., KY. These records have only been in KC eight or ten months now, and aren't well known. But what a treasure trove!
