Springfield Prison Records

I had believed for years that records pertaining to Springfield Prison did not survive the War or at least never made it to the War Dept. after the war. Certainly, there is no reference, whatsoever, in the NARA Microfilm Series M598, "Records of the War Dept. Relating to Confederate POW's 1861-5." In a recent trip to NARA, I found otherwise. In Record Group 109, Entry 199 is the complete collection of Federal Prison Records. At the end of this entry are the misc. prisons or "Stations" for which Springfield seems to have been considered. In any case, there exists about a half box of rolls of prisoners including arrival lists, transfer lists, monthly rosters, etc. Most rolls are for 1862 with a few covering 63-65. There were a large number of transfers to Gratiot and Myrtle St. Prisons. Surprisingly, there were a large number of civilians confined at Springfield. Unfortunately, the Springfield rolls were never microfilmed by NARA or otherwise published. A researcher will have to go to NARA in DC to access the records.
